Talking to young people about their wellbeing and getting support

If you are worried about a young person, no matter what they are going through, help available. It is important you talk to them as a first step.

If you need help starting a conversation there are some hints and tips on the Young Minds website. We have shared them here.

To get further support, you could talk to a teacher in school. Our experience shows that working together achieves the best outcomes. If you wish to talk to school, contacting the young person's form tutor is a good place to start. Alternatively, you could speak to a Youth Worker, Social Worker or the young person's GP if you need to.

We have put this guide together to signpost our students’ and families to the appropriate support if they need it. There are many local and national organisations but here are a few key services in Leeds that families can access directly:

  • MindMate help young people and their families in Leeds find help with their mental health and wellbeing. Find out about all the services on offer in Leeds for under 16’s here.
  • follow MindMate on social media for posts and videos with help and information.
  • MindMate also provides a single point of access (SPA) to local services including accessing NHS support via the Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Service (CYPMHS – formally CAMHS). By listening to your concerns, they will find the right support and set the wheels in motion.
  • families can visit their website www.mindmate.org.uk for information and guidance, or to make an online referral under the SPA. Alternatively, you can ring the SPA team on 0300 555 0324.
  • Kooth – free online counselling can be accessed here.
  • YoungMinds. You can find them on social media or online. There is a wealth of information on mental health, behaviours and life events.
  • the YoungMinds website and social media channels have a parents helpline which is free to use and can be accessed by calling 0808 802 5544 between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday. A trained advisor can tailor advice to your situation and suggest practical steps you can take, and other ways to support your young person.
