Principal's Update - 6 September 2024

Posted 6th September 2024

Dear families

Welcome to this week's update, I hope you have had a good week. Our first week at Dixons Unity has been brilliant. Attendance is up on last year, behaviour is considerably improved and correction attendance has increased. I would like to thank in particularly our Year 7 students who have made a fantastic start to their time at DUA.

Next week our Y7 students will be completing reading tests. These tests are essential to ensure that we are able to direct the correct support to students who need it. High levels of reading are important in every subject hence our prioritisation in this area of our work.

There are a couple of notices / asks that I have of you this week:

  1. You may have noticed that the school gates are locked during the school day, this is in response to changes in guidance and incidents over the summer. Should you require access during the day please contact the number of the sign on the gate and we will ensure it is opened. Thank you for your support and patience.
  2. Drop off and pick ups are incredible busy at present. If possible I ask that you encourage your child to walk or use public transport. Reducing the number of car drop offs helps both traffic flow and the environment.
  3. I mentioned last week that our enrichment offer is larger than ever before. The details of all our clubs are now on the website here. I would appreciate it if you spoke to your child and encouraged them to attend at least one club. Many of you will be aware that to support the management of this area of our work we will be launching the Evolve app. We had a false start this week but will ensure that it is ready to go in the coming days and launch with a full guide on how and why you will want to access the app.

Finally, I would like to remind you of a staffing change that will be important to many of you. Will Jackson started his role as Senior Leader and SENDCO this week. Mr Jackson is an experienced teacher and qualified SENDCO and is well placed to continue the excellent work in recent years. Mr Jackson will be available Thursday afternoons for meetings, please call Main Reception if you would like to book an appointment.

Thank you for your support, please keep encouraging attendance!

Mr A Jacobs
