Culture Day - Friday 18 October 2024

At Dixons Unity we are proud to serve our community and are always looking for ways to celebrate our students. On Friday 18 October 2024, we will be hosting our first annual Culture Day. This will be an opportunity for staff and students to celebrate their heritage and identity and joyfully explore the diversity of our community. Hopefully, we will begin a tradition that we can build on year on year.

Students will be able to come to school wearing an outfit that represents their culture or a culture of their choice. This could range from traditional dress to the uniform of a sports team or activity they take part into something which represents an important event or ceremony in their lives, or one of the British Values we have been learning about in PDS (democracy, individual liberty, rule of law, tolerance and mutual respect). Students can also wear their uniform or DUA PE kit if this is what they would feel most comfortable in. The day coincides with Show Racism the Red Card Day, so students could choose to wear an item of red in solidarity with this cause. This is the first time that we are hosting a Culture Day, and it is designed to promote cultural awareness, inclusivity, and understanding. Lessons throughout the day will be tailored to reflect these key themes.

If your child has PE on this day, they should bring their PE kit to change into as normal. All students should bring their bags and equipment as usual. To help maintain our high standards, there are some items of clothing that students must not come to school in:

  • Crop tops
  • Cycling shorts
  • Political slogans or inappropriate logos, images, or text that may cause offence to others
  • Names of political parties or political leaders
  • Hats, unless part of traditional cultural dress
  • Open-toed shoes (e.g. sandals, sliders, flip flops, crocs etc.)
  • False nails
  • False eye lashes
  • Jewellery
  • Masks, balaclavas or sunglasses

If your child attends school in inappropriate clothing, we will ask them to return home to change into something more suitable or we will lend them school uniform for the day.

Friday 18 October is also the last day of term and so the Academy Day will finish at 12:40. At 13:00, we would like to invite you to join us for a Global Family Feast in the dining hall. We hope to share dishes from around the world and would appreciate contributions from families. Any contributions can be dropped off at reception throughout the day on Friday 18 October. We are a nut free school and so please do not send anything containing nuts. It would be helpful if food could be labelled to clarify if it contains any of the most common allergens. These are: celery, cereals containing gluten (such as wheat, barley and oats), crustaceans (such as prawns, crabs and lobsters), eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs (such as mussels and oysters), mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites and tree nuts (such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios and macadamia nuts).

If students and families would like to stay behind to take part in the global family feast, please make your way to main reception to sign in for 1:00pm. Please note, if you or your child have a particular food allergy, we suggest you should avoid eating dishes at the Global Family Feast as we cannot guarantee that any food prepared is allergen free.

We are so looking forward to sharing this day with students and hope that you will support us in ensuring that students are appropriately dressed and ready to take part. If you have any questions, or would like to discuss anything further, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Clynes (sclynes@dixonsua.com) or contact the academy on 0113 512 5530.
